Eco-Anxiety among youth: a call to action
The results of this study deeply moved me. They show just how heavily the climate crisis weighs on younger generations. Fifty-nine percent of children and adolescents report feeling “very” or “extremely” worried about their future. In France, these concerns are just as strong, with many young people feeling fear, sadness, and anger. Seventy-five percent believe the future is frightening, and 83 percent think humanity has failed to protect the planet.
What struck me as well is that 64 percent of young people feel betrayed by government inaction in the face of the climate crisis. The impact on their mental health is significant, with more than 45 percent saying it negatively affects their daily lives. As one child put it: “I don’t want to die. But I don’t want to live in a world that doesn’t care about children and animals.”
???? How can we take action? Just as companies have sustainability goals, we can set personal and family sustainability goals at our own level—reducing food waste, minimizing consumption, buying locally, optimizing our energy use, and caring for the nature around us. Setting family KPIs and tracking them week by week can make a difference.
Together, we can combat biodiversity loss and build a better future for our children and the planet.
